The Madsen Building at The University of Sydney is a gothic style building constructed in the 1940s, with a sandstone façade and detailed sandstone mouldings throughout. The Madsen Building is an impressive structure standing at the City Rd entrance of the University campus. The University of Sydney commissioned Belmadar to carry out a range of refurbishment works, including a full make-safe of the deteriorating sandstone façade and the building's sandstone tower. The project's main challenges were the strict heritage restoration guidelines and carrying out all works on a live, operational campus, which were overcome by: Designing a detailed technical solution that supported the scaffold to overcome the unsound structural sandstone facade (particularly in the tower) and; Establishing and maintaining a collaborative relationship with the client, the heritage architect and the campus's stakeholders to, Deliver a unique and successful project.
